I had a conversation with our Tennis producer about a lack of talented men's tennis players in the United States. So, what's going on? Why is it that we aren't generating players with the talent and heart of Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras? I would even settle for Michael Chang or Jim Courier.
The closest we've come to Chang and Courier is Andy Roddick, and he hasn't been able to take his game to the next level. James Blake has shown some promise, but he, too, has suffered from injuries that have affected his consistency and level of play. Should I even mention Mardy Fish?
Getting back to my original question, is tennis an after-thought for our young ones, who are steered toward football, basketball, and to a lesser degree, soccer and baseball?
I'll end by saying I really enjoyed watching Connors, McEnroe, Agassi and Sampras play back in the day. I can't say this to be the case for Roddick and Blake.
